Help visual voice mail only over 3g/4g?

Am I missing something... VVM only seems to sync with Verizon thru 3G or 4G. Rarely, if ever, when on wifi... at home or at work. Really?

Save yourself some money, switch to google voice and use the visual voicemail feature there its better, free, and it works over wifi.

I had a problem with my visual voicemail. Today I called tech support and she reset everything. I then asked if it only works over 3g/4g and the answer was "yes". Well, when I turn on my wifi (and leave 3g/4g on), my 3g/4g turns "white" and no data is used while I'm on wifi. Wifi seems to have the priority. I guess 3g/4g kicks in when it has to but for the most part, I remain on wifi. Previous to this issue, I would leave my wifi on and turn off my 3g/4g when I was on wifi. This seem to be the only way to get visual voicemail to work (leaving 3g/4g on when on wifi). If I am on wifi only and I miss a call, I can get it via voicemail when I turn on my 3g/4g.

duckster, do you notice any difference in battery drain by leaving both wifi and cell data on? I had a significant decrease in battery drain when turning off cell data when wifi on.

So you are saying that when you turn OFF data, and wifi ON, you have a significant decrease?

To be honest, I haven't had time to run it down yet, but I mostly use wifi and I can get between 2 to 3 days of usage before needing a recharge. I'm using the extended battery. I also updated to the latest version of software for my cell and it rocks. I actuality, the more you have on, the faster the battery will deplete. My other option (and this is what I will probably do) is just leave data off when I'm on wifi and when I see the "missed call" icon, then I till turn on data and get the visual voicemail.

Yes. I leave wifi always on and have smart settings to turn off cellular data when connected to home or any of my work wifi networks. I experienced significantly less battery drain with these settings. Visual Voice mail, however, does not work. Several other apps do not connect via wifi either.

The only problem with leaving wifi on is that when you leave the house and forget to turn it off, it will search for a wifi signal (scan) and that is how you can lose battery power. However, if you make it a habit to turn it off, it should default to 3g/4g with the "smart setting".

Visual voicemail will not connect without 3g/4g. It will not work with wifi as per the tech. You may need a new sim card if it is not working with 3g/4g.

I finally charged my phone last night and I got about 3 days out of it again. I went without charging it until it completely shut down. The charge was fast too.

True, but the longest time between wifi's is my 20 minute commute at the beginning and end of each day. Not so long of a drain such that it's worth it as long as I don't care about visual VM not working.

I'm experimenting with "YouMail" right now to see how that works. I find it a bit clunky... but I am getting VVM's on wifi.

Cool. I'm going to link to this topic so let me know if you find o-)ut anything else as far as updates helping with the "clunkiness" of the program. Right now I'm on an evaluation of visual voice mail so if I find something better, I'll save $2.99:

I have been using YouMail for sometime now and really like it. You can hardly beat free and it is focused on Visual Voice Mail, not trying to solve every VOIP issue out there.

My two cents ... :)

Does you mail take the place of the phones voicemail or work with it?

If takes the place of it. However, you can switch to the carrier's VM by using a menu item in YouMail. So you can switch back and forth if you need to.

Rob.

Thanks, I refuse to pay Verizon for visual voice mail.....they get enough of my duckets each month

I certainly agree. You can also do a lot with the free version of YouMail ... custom messages by contact or contact group. You can even have the message start with the callers first name if you want ... "He Bill, Rob is not available to take this call. Please leave a message ...". It also avoids all of the press this button, blah, blah ... which drives me crazy when I am waiting to leave a message for someone.

Do you have to register with their site or does it intergrate seemlessly with our individual carrier? For example, if youmail goes out of business, will the program still work.

I just need to figure out how to forward messages from my carrier to the you mail...trying to set it up now.

No, it does not integrate with the carrier. So the app will not work if they go out of business. However, they have over 2 million registered users of the their app with a solid 4 star rating.

MR... good to see you again. We've been in a few forums together the past couple years. Maybe the MotoQ was the last one? I seek your advice yet again. Contacts sync, with YM... why would I want to do that? I've quite a lot of them. I've not yet synced and YM is acting just like VVM.

It is good be back together on another forum. Sorry for the delay, but I was tied up all day at a symposium.

The only reason to sync a contact to YouMail is for the name recognition (Hi John, Steve is not available) or custom messaging by contact or group. I only have the people synced that I want to have the name recognition working. Otherwise as you pointed out, it works fine without syncing.

Hope all is well.
