Voice dialer for Android - TTS IS TERRIBLE!

Since being forced to update my Android HTC Magic (on Rogers), we now have the new sense ui interface.

Some may have noticed that the voice dialer is missing. The solution is to download "TopVoiceControl" (plus the TTS engine). There are some improvements to this almost identical app (compared to the non-sense ui version). However, the TTS voice is really-really bad! It is just a marginal improvement over the SAM voice from the Atari / Commodore 64 days! Yes, it is that bad!

Furthermore, if you say, "Dial 459 2291"... instead of LOGICALLY reading that back properly, the TTS engine reads it as "Dialing 4 million 590 thousand and 2 hundred and 91" Stupid! :eek:

Besides not reading the numbers back properly, is there any better speech libraries available? This is embarrassingly laughable compared to the iPhone, Palm, and Blackberry. ??The Android is a superphone?? :confused:

Before you shoot me down as nitpicking... this TTS feature is an important feature when you need hands free. This is also a feature that is been offered on many phones (smart or not) and with superior quality (compared to Android) for more than five years now.

It actually works on the HTC Magic OS 1.5, however, because it requires a secondary key input, it usefulness as a hands free feature is limited.
 
Forget about the voice recognition, the regular dialer is terrible! The basics work fine but there are so many usability issues that if I was in sales or something where I used the phone a lot, I would have to change phones. I will detail them on more on topic thread.
 
I've got the Incredible which also uses Sense. I haven't had any uses with the voice dialer. Granted, I haven't used it much as it doesn't work with a BT headset like I'd like, but when I do use it, it works fine. I usually use it when there's a long number to call and I'm too lazy to punch it in. I'll activate the app, say "Call 555 123 4567" and I'll get a nice pop up showing me the number and asking if I want to call it. I've not had any issues with it not recognizing what I want to say.
