Voice dialling not working quite right.

Recently I find I am unable to voice dial my parents.

If I say "hey google, call Hannah" it dials Hannah ( who is on a mobile number )

but if I say "hey google, call Parents" it presents me with the number ( a landline not a mobile ) to call and a confirm option to say I want to call them.

If I say "hey google, call Parents, home" which is how the number is listed - the landline is their home number the response is

"I'm sorry, I don't know how to help with 'call parents, home' ".

Yet I can also say - "hey google, call Halfords, Putney Road" which is not in my contacts and it gets the number ( landline ) from the web and dials it.

I'm sure it's a setting in the phone somewhere to do with dialling. Has anyone got a clue how to help me?

Do you have more than one number listed in your contacts under "parents"? If so, open the contact "parents" and then long press on the number you want to call all the time and set it as the default number.

I know right? It used to work perfectly.

I changed the number to "main" instead of home in case it was a glitch with the "home" tag. But the behaviour was the same.

I've now deleted my parents ( the dream of many a teenager ) and I'm just letting the updated contacts list propagate to the cloud before I replace them ( again the dream of many a teenager ).

Maybe they have you blocked? (the dream of every parent of a teenager :p)

Seriously, when using the hands-free in my car and I say "call home" it just dials my home landline. When I say "call [wife's name]" asks me if I want work or mobile because I have no default set. When i say "call [best friend]" who has five numbers, but mobile set as default, it calls him directly without prompting.

Haha, well it's been 30 years since I was a teenager and my parents are in their late 70's. I was talking to my mother while removing her from my phone :D.

I re-added the contact as "parents" and it still can't voice dial them.

I changed the name to "home" and all it does is ask me who do I want to call.

I can say the name of any other contact and it dials them directly. It's just "parents" it can't handle.

Hmmm. Do you have assistant installed? I've got an LG G6 running Oreo (8.0). Maybe it's something with the Huawei phones. I know they have a heavily modified version of Android.

I wonder if it's getting hung up on the common words like "parents" or "home"? Odd that it should stop working.

Have you tried the basic stuff like clearing your caches and rebooting the phone?

Well, whaddya know? Renamed my "Parents" contact to "Banana"

Me: "Hey Google, Call Banana!"

Google Assistant: Calling Banana, Home.

Works perfectly. Apparently Google has no idea what parents are.

Google prides itself on it's youth, so maybe this is some form of rebellion against the aged. They better stay the heck off my lawn!

Presumably at 49 they can't imagine me actually still having parents, let alone needing to call them. I'm surprised they haven't ordered me to carousel for renewal.

That's fine. I will stick with my bananas

Google appears to know pretty much everything ( read into that what you will: Dun, Dun Duuuuuun)

Thank you for sitting with me during this unsolved but circumvented puzzle.
