have a new LGL31L Straight Talk phone, and when I send a text I have to type it out - I can't figure out how to have it change my voice to printed text.

When I go into the settings for the keyboard, there is a box titled "VOICE INPUT - Show voice input key on keyboard", but that box is greyed out so I can't access it.

Is this phone really incapable of letting me talk a text message, or am I missing something?

What keyboard are you using, perhaps there's an issue with it. It should work, and you should be able dictate your messages.

I'm using Swype + Dragon, I tap the microphone key, it switches to voice recognition mode and can dictate what I want. Give Swype + Dragon a try, should work on very much any device.

You could try clearing cache/data to the keyboard app,See if that fixes it.
Other than that,Try what mikedt suggested.

Try to install Goole TTS from the play store...if its android it should work...that's what I had to do with my old phone

You have to make sure that you have the voice option of the keyboard turned on. If not you won't be able to access the voice typing.

First 2 pics the option is off as you can see.

Hope that helps. All phones are laid out differently so you'll just have to find those options in the language and keyboard settings.

I wanted to thank everyone who has taken the time to reply to my post. It was very frustrating to find the soulution to this problem. Nothing suggested seemed to work except when I read the post about clearing the keyboard cache and data. When I went to clear the data I had a warning that the program would be deleted permenetly. Well i got to thinking does Google offer a compatable keyboard to my LG android? So I typed in LGKeyboard and Wala there it was. So instead of deleting my keyboard, I downloaded the app. It then told me I needed to download Go Keyboard so I did did. As I was installing the Go Board it gave me a screen with 3 options. use my LG keyboard, Use GO keyboard, and Use GOOGLE Voice. Well I selcted Google Voice and uninstalled the Go KeKeyboard. wow it workes. Its not greyed out anymore and I have already used it. Thanks for getting me on track to fix thia isssue. Please feel free to share this fix with everyone. Sincerely, Greg.
