Voice Navigation over Bluetooth

Lurker
I recently switched from Windows Phone, and on my old phone, voice navigation would break through as a Bluetooth "call" in my car, regardless of what source the stereo was set to (HD radio, USB, etc.); on my new Galaxy S8+, it seems that voice navigation only works when the stereo is playing Bluetooth media from the phone; how do I get the directions to break through as a notification/call rather than treating it like music? Haven't found a relevant setting yet, but it's quite annoying that I can't get voice directions while listening to the radio... I know Waze has an option to play audio over the phone's speaker, which is kind of a clunky work-around, but better than nothing. Surely there's some way of getting this to work properly though?

FWIW on every Android phone I've had any satnav app voice directions are sent as media audio, not phone call audio. I believe it's same for iPhone as well.
Can't comment about Windows Phone ss I've never seen one.
