Voice over 4g?

Hi,

Just moved into a new apartment and of course after settling in I've found that my reception is awful. Turns out I'm just a bit outside what VM lists for their voice and 3g range. I can get a bar if I hold my phone up to the window in my room but that's about the best I've got. I am however under their "best" coverage area for 4g wimax, but was under the impression that wimax is often unable/not used for carrying voice. I've still got a $25 plan with an optimus elite, and I like it, but I'd be willing to splurge for an s2 and accept a more expensive plan if I knew that I could make calls as normal over 4g. My other main options are get a cell signal repeater, or port my number to Google Voice and forward the calls to my cell and a voip line in my apartment so I can still take calls.

TL;DR -- I'm in a 4g wimax coverage area, but not voice or 3g, if I get an s2 can I make regular voice calls over the 4g network?

Wimax is not used for voice calls, it is data only. You would need something like GrooveIP and Google Voice, Skype, or another VoIP solution if you want to use Wimax for calls.

I have the same issue with the same phone.

Download GrooveIP. It uses viop wifi for free calls. It works great. For a few bucks you can get the full version and make calls for free over 3g.
Also download google voice so you can text via 3g and wifi. All available at Google Play store.
This way you save your $25 plan and stay with the same phone.

Get a free google voice phone number and you are set! Have fun.

WiMax can't do voice and its being replaced by LTE. Now there is going to be a new lte capability called VoLTE (voice over lte). Eventually as carriers expand their 4g footprint n look to make 2g/3g phase out we will be doing calls on lte. But its gonna be awhile... virgin doesn't sell signal boosters like sprint's airave do they?
