Voice Search works but Voice Actions dont???

I have downloaded the google Voice Search app/widget thingy (sorry - new to all this smart phone stuff) and yes it works when I open google search and say various words that it then searches on google, but.....

I cannot for the life of me see how to get it to take "voice actions" like "text to" or "send mail to" - the mic icon doesn't appear when I open the sms or email functions and I can't see how to enable it. Do I even have the right app to do this? I'm sure I have but can't get it to do anything other than voice search on google!

This is what i did to get it to work.
- Uninstall the app from the handset.
- Power down the handset.
- Wait a few seconds, turn handset on.
- Go to Market.
- Look for and reinstall Google search.
