how do I keep my voicemail messages for extended times before they are automatically deleted please?

Voicemail is a service provided by your carrier, it's not a function of the phone itself. You will either have to contact your carrier to see if they have some sort of message archiving service or you can used an app like Call Recorder to record your VM messages to a file and store them for later retrieval.
