VoiP help

I have droid Incredible and am trying to voip with someone on iphone. Used viber, but iphone has horrible echo.
My question, do the voip app/programs have to be the same?
Because I can use groove ip, GV, but it's not avail on iphone. And the iphone can use talkatone or textfree with voice, and those aren't avail on droid. My question is has anyone been calling between platforms and been successful? We had bad luck with Skype. Thanks again.
