Volume buttons

Up until today I could use the physical volume control buttons on the side of my s3 to control the volume of my mp3 player. But since this afternoon these buttons only control the volume of the telephone. I have to go into the volume menu to turn my music up or down. Any tips on how to change this back to the original settings?
Thanks in advance!

You have to be in the music player app of choice in order to adjust volume of the MUSIC.
When not in any music/video app the volume rocker will always adjust the RINGER volume.

That's not the case for me at all, as long as music is playing at the time it will adjust media volume even if I'm not in said music app.

Thanks for your answer. The problem is that even when I am playing music, the buttons will still only control the sound for the telephone. If I want to change the volume of a song, I have to go into the volume menu. In other words: my phone doesn't seem to notice when I am using a media player. Very frustrating. Solutions will be much appreciated.

Is it just the music player which has the problem or is it the same for other media such as your video player? If it's only affecting the music player it might be worth clearing data for the music player in settings, application manager

Solved. Turned out that my uninstalled poweramp player had messed with some settings of the stock & n7 player. Reinstalling the latter did it.
Cheers guys. I'm new to android & this forum - love how everybody helps out.
