Help Volume is too loud.

The lowest volume on my phone is still too loud for background study music. My phone (Moto G) has 'notched' volume control: the volume can only be raised by levels. I can set my volume to 0 or 1 but not 0.5 or some variant. The IPod touch that I previously owned had a sliding volume control. I was able to change the volume to somewhere in between levels. Is there an app for this?

Not sure if this will fit the bill, but try the trial version of PowerAmp.
It has a little dial you can use to control your volume.
Are you using the stock player currently?

The app looked so promising, but (alas!) the dial is a con. I moved the dial between 0 and 1 and the volume turned off :'(

The Play store seems full of volume boosting apps.

One last option, if no one offers any other suggestions, is to root your device, install the Xposed installer, then find a module that adds extra volume steps.
For example, the module I run adds 30 steps to my volume control.
