VPN and WiFi Hotspot

One of my favorite features in the S7 is its ability to share WiFi (i.e. act as a WiFi extender / repeater). Since I travel a lot I like to connect my Chromecast in hotel rooms. However since hotel WiFi's need you to login, I wouldn't be able to connect my Chromecast to the internet. S7 solves the problem very elegantly.

Now the problem is that I need to connect to some media that is location specific (Hotstar / Netflix content). I use a VPN (tunnelbear) to access that content on my phone / laptop. However, if I share my S7 WiFi with the VPN on, the Chromecast does not connect to it?

What could be the problem and is there a way around it without rooting my phone?

I think you're mistaken. The S7 cannot act as a WiFi repeater. That's not what a WiFi Hotspot on a phone is.

Unless you're talking about WiFi sharing. But the problem I think is that the VPN doesn't play well with extending the WiFi. The VPN makes the phone basically not in the same network as the Chromecast, hence can't connect.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I meant the wifi sharing. And as you said VPN refuses to play along. Is there any way around it? I thought since the Chromecast is connected to the phone's wifi already, it wouldn't be a problem.

Regards,

I think if you got a VPN activated on the device, all data is tunnelled through it, including the Chromecast software. And that's probably what it's objecting to.

pay your carrier for hotspot access so you don't need a vpn, or check options on another vpn you can use which allows the connection

Yes, I confirm it does share a WiFi connection as well as mobile data. Not sure why you would though. I guess to extend range.
