VPN wont work on Android phone

Hello.

I have been trying to use my Android 2.3 phone with a VPN but unfortunately can't get it to work.

The VPN provider I am with have admitted that PPTP VPN's do not currently work on Android phones and this is an issue and fault with Google. They say they and other providers have been trying to work with Google to fix this.

At the moment they claim you can only connect to VPN using Android phone using L2TP with a limited number os servers.

I have set this all up and of the 4 I tried 3 did manage to connect. The 4th connected briefly before losing connection a few seconds later.

Unfortunately once connected to an L2TP server absolutely nothing on my Android phone will work while connected!!! Twitter, Facebook, TuneIn Radio, Browsers, eMail, you name it nothing that uses the internet will work while I am connected to the VPN.

I am wondering why this is? Is it a general fault with all Android phones? Has anyone had success with a VPN on their Android phone up to version 2.3? And if so which provider did you use and what are the costs?

I have to say I do like my phone because it is pretty rugged and good value for money, but unfortunately the Android system and a lot of the bugs it has is making me consider just going with an iPhone as my next phone.

Thanks for any advice and further insight on this.

John

2.3 (gingerbread) had a lot of issues as an OS and android really didn't come into it's own until ICS - 4.0.1. you're basically running the windows 95 of android. it's solid enough to release, but there is a LOT that needs work to make it great. upgrade to a phone with 4.0.1 or better, and it's a whole new experience.

i'm not saying that that's your VPN issue, though it could be as i personally can't rule it out without access to the VPN you're using or a 2.3 phone to test on it.

another possibility is that the VPN isn't allowing that old an OS to run on it's system.

Almost certain it's an Android version problem. OP you really need a 4.0, 4.1 or later device. IMO trying to make a VPN work with something like Froyo 2.2 or Gingerbread 2.3, is like trying to make a VPN work with Windows 3.1 these days.

Another possiblity OP, are you in a country like China, Syria, Egypt, UAE, Iraq, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc, where you might have to use a stealth VPN, that uses double encryption and port randomisation to avoid being censored and locked-out?

Try DroidVPN, seems to work ok from China, using it now. It's in the Play Store.
