Help VZ Note 4 Lollipop Issues

Lurker
Hey guys,

I've been looking for definitive answers for my questions in the forum, but I really haven't found anything:

1.) In Settings >> Sound and notification >> Notification Access my phone says "Applications cannot read notifications" and when I go in to "Notification Access" to change that setting the only app that populates is "Gear VR Service". I am having a helluva a time getting apps to notify me properly and one would think this is the place to correct that. Any thoughts? I don't even know what Gear VR Service is. It's not one of my apps.

2.) Reverting VZ Note 4 to KK and BLOCKING OTA Updates: I have experienced most of the many problems people have reported on this forum (diminished radio signal in marginal service areas such as my house (which I think is the principle culprit of my noticeably crappier battery life), slower 4TE upload/download speeds (everywhere), buggy bluetooth performance, inability to maintain a stable hotspot connection with iOS devices (hate that I even have an iOS device but talk to my boss' boss) which, regrettably, may force my hand to return to KK. I've read places where I can revert back to VZ KK simply enough but what is going to stop VZ from forcing the same OTA update up my a**? I wasn't successful in blocking this OTA so I'm looking for long term solutions here.

Really frustrated with VZ/Samsung 5.0.1. My Nexus 7 (2013) updated to 5.0 long ago and I have been nothing but satisfied. This VZ/Samsung iteration is a pretty big disappointment.

I totally feel the same way and if you're successful in reverting back please let me know how.

Has anyone else noticed a MAJOR drop in battery life after the VZW Lollipop update for the SGN4? I feel like I'm getting only 60% of my pre-update battery life now.

Have you tried a factory reset after the update? I know it's a pain but it's highly recommended after a major system update. It may very well clear up a lot of your problems.

There is no way to revert back to KK without rooting your phone.

I got mine a few hours ago, its the verizon that cant be rooted, it just updated to lollipop, and right now its the most amazing phone I have ever owned, I cant wait til a root solution comes out!

Jxker please let me know how your battery life fares after the update. Thanks for the tip rivera02 but I really don't wan to do a factory reset. I'm really angry about the battery life issue because that was one of my favorite features, but I'm not willing to give up any data to get it back.

My issue is I see ZERO improvement with L.

It is not any faster
Battery life appears worse overall
Flash no longer works
2GB less storage space.

IMO Lollipop does not lick- it sucks and Android is getting more iOS like with each revision. Were it not for emulators, I would just as well go to an iOS device since iOS does a better job of being iOS. I already use my iPad Air 128gb a lot more than my Note 2014.

Point being- iOS actually gets BETTER with revisions. Android since Kitkat- not so much.

This may be helpful -

Start by clearing the cache - you won't lose any data.

If you need to clean the Dalvik cache via a factory data reset, that's not a Lollipop issue, it's an Android bug that eventually hits everyone and it's been around for a long time.

Not wanting to lose data is perfectly logical - so you need a reliable backup and restore strategy anyway. A power surge while charging, a hard drop on the pavement, or a thief could come along and lose your data anyway.

There's a VERY high likelihood that one or both of your operating system caches are tangled up now. No update is going to fix that.

Thanks for the helpful tips, EarlyMon! What do you recommend as a good backup system/strategy for someone on a Mac?

Make sure that your contacts and calendar events are in your Gmail contacts cloud, drag and drop to copy all of your media (as seen by https://www.android.com/intl/en_us/filetransfer/ if you don't have that already) and then try Helium Backup from the Play Store. Note the description, you need to install some of it on your Mac from a link that he gives you. No drivers required of course.

There's also Samsung Kies for Mac and others have reported some good results with that, definitely worth checking out. I haven't been near that in forever so no way do I remember the options, sorry. Anyway, check here -

I've got a Note 4 on Verizon, and today, I am officially fed up with it. I've chugged along for a few weeks now with Lolipop, and the bugs just seemed like random bugs up until the past 4-5 days. I'm starting to realize that this is all Lolipop related.

Here are some of the issues I am having.

1. An alarm goes off. I can't swipe it to turn it off.
2. Phone was sleeping, would not wake up, had to pull battery
3. Constant messages about a service (usually google related) has stopped
4. A call comes in and I can't answer it by swiping

There are more, but they all seem to be tied to a process or service that's stopped. I think most of it has to do with my phone while it's sleeping, or at the very least, the screen is off when something happens. I think this is somehow related.

The incident today which made me finally decide to look into this was a call I missed from my son's doctor's office. I couldn't take the call. Nothing I did would let me take the call. I started slapping the phone's screen out of frustration.

Once the call ended, I was able to get to my homescreen where I got another message about a service of some sort stopping, but I quickly moved on and didn't see which one.

I have decided to now take each of them seriously and pay attention and take notes of each issue if I can.

I wiped the cache yesterday but that clearly didn't fix it. Do you think I should put anymore time into nailing down my issues, and the services that stop? Would my time be better served getting everything ready for a factory reset instead?

I've found the tech people at the Samsung places in the Best Buy stores to be very helpful Have u tried calling samsung or trying the best buy route?

This is strange...though I've only had my Note 4 for a little over a week I'm not seeing any of these issues.

Glad to hear it! :thumbsupdroid:
Did your Note4 have Lollipop 5.0 out-of-the-box?

I got it through a trade for my 6 Plus but it did have Lollipop installed. I still had my M8 at the time so I used it until I got home and factory reset the Note again before I set it up. Maybe that's why I'm not having any issues. I also wipe my cache partition weekly on Sunday night before bed. The only thing I'd like to do is find out what keeps waking my phone so much when the screen is off but I still get good battery life so it's not terribly pressing.

The factory reset &/or the cache partition wipe are no doubt why you're not experiencing many of the issues that some are.
Most are loathe to a reset, but, this will eliminate a lot of the bugs most are experiencing on Lollipop.
The mfgs/carriers are gonna recommend a reset if all else fails before warranty service kicks in,so,those w/issues simply need to bite the bullet & take a reset to debug Lollipop.
