vzw 3g congestion due to iphones? or not? would LTE be the answer?

After the iphone debuted on ATT I switched to VZW because as soon as the iphones hit ATT the service just sucked balls in NYC. within a month it was so bad. If this happens on VZW would upgrading to an LTE phone such as the Droid Thunderbolt be the fix? Is the LTE network using separate bandwidth than the 3g devices? Or if they share the same bandwidth would LTE be the answer anyways?

You've been misled. A study determined that your average Android user uses more than twice as much data as your average iPhone user.

On top of that, broadband wireless card users use more data than all of the iphone users on AT&T. iPhone user data traffic isn't going to be quite as big a deal on Verizon as it was on AT&T, mostly because of better network management.

Droid X users (like myself) use twice as much data as iphone users in the study that was taken about 2 months ago. The iphone and iFans haven't affected vzw as it did at&t as big red built a huge solid network. at&t can tote voice and data simultaneously all they want, but Verizon proved how awesome their network is

A first week study showed the iPhone is having no discernible impact on Verizon's network. However, it's only been a week. Of course, a report also just came out that the iPhone launch on Verizon did not meet expectations by Big Red or the Big Apple. Then again, I'm not sure what they were smoking in Cupertino, thinking 8 month old hardware would draw a huge crowd on a network that's about to launch 4G phones and already has several good high end Android options. If the iPhone 5 isn't a single hardware solution for Verizon and AT&T in July, and they refresh Verizon's on a 12 month basis in Feb, Apple's expectations will continue to be too big.

I think most of the iPhone users that use data probably didn't come over. Even spotty data is sometimes less annoying than our non-burst data speeds.

No, people would be stupid for buying them... I have no doubt that Apple expected to put one out in February, and then launch a "Universal iphone" (Capable of GSM/CDMA) in July and that people would buy both of them.

Think of it this way... some of us would rather have 1 megabit of data down consistently EVERYWHERE than 120k of data with an occasional bump to 2-3 megabits down.

Verizon sells their network on consistency, and it is consistent.
The iPhone hardly registered as a blip.

It's slow, but highly reliable. I WILL get my email, pretty much no matter where I am in the US. Business users prefer reliability over speed. You can overcome speed limits, but it's impossible to overcome no connection.

The truly sad part is that they're pricing the iPhone 4 right now like it's a new release when you'll get the next one in 3 months for the same price point. Sure, there's a sucker in every bunch, but it should have come as no suprise why sales aren't meeting expectations. The brain trust in Cupertino thinks the average consumer is stupid.

Network speeds are not consistent everywhere, even on Verizon. That is why I was talking about burst speeds.

I agree. Out here, AT&T + T-Mobile is almost as reliable in my stomping grounds, Sprint not so much. The only reason I bother with Verizon for data now is that the corporate discount makes it almost acceptable for things to take as long as they do to get transfer. Our higher ups are thinking about reliability (if you knew these guys you'd be cracking up to see that I wrote that they are thinking) and security.

When I am on a mobile device and on the internet, it is because I am not in a position to go back to my computer (i.e. I want it quickly.) In my case slow is nearly as bad as it not getting there at all. I know for some people, that is good enough. If I were in this area and I were not getting the discount, I would probably be on T-Mobile and saddled with that stupid G2 (need a keyboard.)

Yeah that is probably it. That is why the iPad sucks so badly, why it took Nintendo 13, 13 years to light the Gameboy. (No, I am not bitter about that, why do you ask?)

Have you logged into Verizon wireless lately? The home page was basically asking you if you wanted to go to information about the iPhone 4, or go to Verizon wireless.

They are pushing it so hard right now that I find it absolutely hilarious.
