VZW Galaxy Note 4: Edge or 2 yr contract?

I upgraded to the Droid Turbo a couple months back and wasn't offered the Edge plan by the Verizon sales rep (walk in store). My wife is on my plan and is also eligible for an upgrade (we both used the Razr M previously) but she wanted to research the newer phones herself and in doing so has identified the Galaxy Note 4 as her top choice. We stopped by a Verizon retail shop yesterday and it turns out that she's eligible for Edge but we're honestly not sure which is the better deal, the Edge plan or the standard 2 year contract? She's happy to stay with the phone for two years and isn't big on jumping to the latest and greatest as soon at they come out, so that's not an advantage. Also, the price of the Note 4 is pretty hefty and needs to be factored in.

Bottom line: which plan is cheapest, both on a month to month billing basis and in the long run? I have the More Everything plan (2 year contract) which works fine for me since I use wifi at home and at work and this could apply to her new phone as well. Advice?

Your overall cost with edge is cheaper than with 2 yr (in your case).

On 2 yr you pay 299.99 up front plus 40/month line cost. That's an average of 52.50 month. Your actual bill would be cheaper but your overall cost is higher.

On Edge you pay 29.16 a month plus 40 line minus 25 month edge discount is 44.16. Again your overall base line cost is less.

You could save more by choosing a cheaper phone on edge that has less than 25 dollar a month monthly cost as they still giver the discount. The 25 dollar edge discount dependant on having the appropriate data package, other wise it's 15.

Go with what works for you, I just hope I helped you to look at it in a few different ways. Good luck.

This is the reason that I have either gone with a 2 year contract at the lowest possible price benefit, or just outright bought a phone used, and then register it w/o a contract. I have kept every phone that I have bought. For as long as they continue to work, they make good emergency backups to use until you can make a logical decision as to how to get a replacement for your good "now broken" phone.

I still have a Galaxy S phone that is 4 or 5 years old. It laid idle for a year after I bought my S5 in April 2014.... then a niece broke her phone and the old 'S' phone was put back to work..... it did a yeoman's job for 3 months until she could dig herself out of trouble and get what she really wanted. Slow? Yep, it is... but if all you do is Texting as she does, who cares?

You only have to hand in the old phone on edge if you are upgrading less than two years and still owe on it. After two years the phone is paid off and is yours just like the two year contract.

You have to look at it like this:

Edge you get up to $25 off the monthly $40 and you make phone payments, usually about $25 for two years = $600 for the phone. After two years the Edge payment goes away and the line access is still $15 (depending on your data package).

Two year contract you are paying $25 in the monthly $40 access for the phone = $600 plus the down payment, say, $200 for a total of $800 for the phone. After two years you can apply the month to month discount and the line access goes to $15 (depending on your data package). You have to manually apply for the month to month discount on the More Everything Plan by calling in or on My Verizon under Products and Apps. Otherwise you will still pay $40/line.

Buy the phone outright, it costs $600-$700 and stay on month to month. Your line access is still $15/line (depending on your data package).
