W7HP Indexing

Other way around for me: file indexing used to be the bane of my life on XP and I wound up turning it off. On Win7, I've never really noticed it - possibly not un-related to the fact my Win7 machine is (according to Moore's law) roughly 10x faster than my old one :D

That’s what I thought too, and when I first disabled it, things slowed to a crawl, making me believe that it must be true. But after having it off for a few weeks, things are quite the same as before I started goofing with it. Then again, I’m only using about forty gigs.

Indexing is one of those Microsoft "hey, isn't this a neat idea - if we could only get it working" things. Even though they announce AI decades ago, I still don't expect answers from my computer when I ask it questions.

I've got my indexing off in both WinXP and Win7 on this Lenovo and no speed problems.I use the winXP more but only because the specs on this notebook are a bit low for Win7.
I've never liked,"Windows Search" so use the free version of,"Ultra Search",

UltraSearch - Freeware for Ultra-Fast File Search

tip:Make a short cut on the Desktop/Right click/properties and in the Short-cut key I use F9.I can then access searching from the F9 key :)

I also use Jam Software's Treesize which is useful for finding overlooked large files that can be deleted and I've just noticed they have an,"App" version as well :)

I’ve been using Total Commander on my PC for over a decade and on my droids for several years. That’s what made me curious about the virtues of indexing; Commander’s speed was not affected either way.

Similar topic: taking further advice from complete strangers, I turned off Superfetch to see if it trimmed memory, by doing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters"
Right-click on both EnablePrefetcher and EnableSuperfetch
Select Modify on each of these to change the value from 1 (or 3) to 0

So far, nothing seems any different; same memory used, same pokey launch times with one gig... yay or nay?

I've found no advantage disabling either pre-fetch or Super-Fetch in WinXp/Win7.

I used to,"Soluto" to track down slow loading and use in Win7,

https://www.soluto.com/

Free and none invasive. They don't spam you and once used can be removed.Try it for a few days to see if it helps.

Here's my maintenance/tweak programs.

CCcleaner and set to clean the pre-fetch as well now and then but leave it to do it's job for a while. It serves pretty much the same purpose as the old,"Vcache" in Win95/98.

Already had some off that impressive list, trying others. And I re-enabled fetching, and .net too, for Soluto’s shenanigans.
