'Waiting For Sync' Email Problem

Hi, I am new to the Forum and I am hoping you can help me. I have a ZTE AWE running Android 4.2.1 I am trying to connect to my work email account, we have Microsoft Exchange 2003. The problem is after I enter all my information I get this 'Waiting For Sync' message. I have been searching the web for a solution and the only one I can find is to got to Data Usage and turn Auto-sync Data on. I have tried this and it did not solve my problem. Anybody got any other ideas?

I'm on a OnePlus One and getting the same message for an Office365 account. I also turned on "auto-sync data", but it hasn't worked.

Any ideas?
