Warranty Transfers

I am going to try and call again, but I asked Verizon about warranty transfers on a used phone and they replied to me like I was nuts for even asking. They said warranty only applies to phones purchased on the account itself.

I'm having a bit of a hard time believing that and I will call a third time. Can anyone else confirm this?

You would think the one year would apply no matter who has it... If the phone is stamped Verizon they all came from through the same place...

Nope. And the reason isn't Verizon. The manufacturers can and do restrict the warranty to the original purchaser of record (i.e. the account owner of the account which the device was purchased under), once the device changes to another account, that warranty is gone.

But if the original owner doesnt register it with the manufacturer, they only know that a Verizon customer has it... I would recommend though if you buy a high end device thats used, to get the insurance... They have let me insure one that I had bought in like new condition...

The one year warranty starts the day the esn first becomes active no matter how many account it goes under. The warranty is established by the manufacturer and honored by vzw. In the event that the esn of said device is activated onto another account, it is immediately void with vzw, no questions asked. Now if you are still within the first year of it being activated you can go straight to the manufacturer for any warranty claims as they will still honor them.

My son had an Inc that he dropped and cracked the screen. He took it into a VZW store and they said it voided his warranty (phone only 6 months old). He bought another and gave me the Inc. I sent it into HTC's repair company and had the screen fixed, but then it started operating very strangely and wouldn't let me do a factory reset. VZW tried to troubleshoot it with me, but nothing worked. They could see that the phone came from my son's account and was now activated on my account. They were nice enough to make an exception and honor the warranty and immediately shipped me a certified like-new Inc. They didn't have to do it because the warranty was void (both because of the screen and the transfer), but doing so kept a long-time customer happy. If only I could get them to send me an Eris that actually worked for my daughter. We're on #4 now.

That is wrong.

The warranty is not through Verizon but the phone manufacturer. And if you get a copy of the manual, you will see it is only for the original purchaser.

So....to make a long story short, your grievance is actually with Motorola/HTC/whomever and you should take it up with them for warranty issues. The bad news is, the warranty is not transferable.

Verizon provides the replacement service as a courtesy so you don't have to wait for weeks for Motorola, et al to fix your phone.
