water damage.won't turn on

My phone dropped from my pocket into the toilet. It was in there for no longer than 5 seconds. I took out the battery and tried to dry everything off. In a panic I turned it back on to see if it would work. I know, this was VERY, very stupid. I wasn't thinking at all. It started to turn on,then the screen flickered and everything went black. I dried it out properly and it still won't turn on. I've plugged it into the charger,nothing.Is my phone now useless? My mom sayswill not buy me another phone until the contract is up, in over a year.Is there anything I can do? Or did I completely screw myself? :confused:
If my phone is gone, can I still save my contacts and/or pictures?
I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm just freaking out!!

try putting the phone in a cup of rice (not joking). rice absorbs water. it worked for my friend's blackberry but not sure if it'll work for w/e phone you have tho.
 
well.. assuming you have an android phone (that is why you posted on an android forum right?) your contacts shoudl be backed up by the almighty google cloud. as for your pictures.. goodbye.

maybe its time for you to hit up craigslist for used phones then. or try to take it to a repair shop. either way will probably be your solution to your problem.

also dont drop phones into toilets, they dont really like that.

Your pictures should be ok on your SD card. If it was only in the water for 5 seconds it's likely your SD card is ok. Just take out the card and mount it on a computer.

As for the phone, turning it on before drying it out for several days was a big mistake. It does sound like there was a short circuit and the MB will need to be replaced.

Do you not have insurance? If you don't have specific insurance for your phone does your home insurance not cover it, mine does (with excess)? Otherwise send it in for a repair it'll still be cheaper than buying a new phone.
 
i really dont understand why people who drop their phones in water TRY TO TURN THEM ON. That is the stupidest thing you can do. 90% of the time, if you dry out the phone PROPERLY and COMPLETELY, and THEN turn it back on, it will usually work fine. When you try to turn the phone on, and theres water inside the circuit boards, the water shorts chips out, and the phone will never work again. If people just WAIT a few days, you can save your phone.
 
Take it a to phone repair shop, but if it doesn’t have insurance it will cost you a lot, but even still, something else can fail after a while, depends on your luck :-P. I know someone who has spilled juice on to his smartphone and got some parts replaced, it was working for a while but after few weeks it again stopped due to something else failing. He has already spent a significant amount the first time around and second repair was going to cost him even more, so he gave up the idea.

As for photos like bluenova said, if they were on the SD card, there is a good chance you can still recover them. Those tiny micro SD cards are tougher than they look. I have washed one of those over and over (inside a SD card adaptor, which I use as a USB flash drive) and it still works :).

This is very true. My wife had a blackberry storm and put it through the washing machine and it was uber broke. We took the back off and the battery out etc and burried it all in a bowl of rice for 4 days and put the phone back together and it was good as new.

The only SLIGHT problem was that the mic was a little bit broke when she was talking on the phone her voice was a bit quiet to the person on the other end.
