Help Water Damaged HTC ONE X

My bf dropped his HTC ONE X in the water while on a fishing trip. He couldnt get it in a bag of rice soon enough to dry it out properly. The phone continued to function normally for about an hour with no issues, and then the screen went black. We took it to a cell phone repair shop, and they said it cannot be fixed. However the phone still powers up, the lights light up, the red light flashes if you plug it in to charge. Is this phone really a total loss? He didnt have insurance at the time, and we dont really want to spend 500 on a new phone. Any help would be appreciated.

If you get it wet,your meant too not use it(take out the battery immediately),because doing so will further damage it.....

I think it's probably stuffed,but might pay too get a second opinion from another shop..
