Weather Widgets

Why all the fascination with weather widgets?

Seems to me as the main function is to show a cute little picture of the current weather. Well, I have a device that does that already- I call it my window. A little low tech, I know, but it was cheap and seems more accurate.

I know they can show you the current weather in other cities, but if you're travelling to another city, you won't be there now, will you? You'll be there at some point in the future, no? If you're there already, try my window trick. It works really well.

And yes, I know you can get cute little pictures for what the weather will be in the next few days. But weather is a hugely complex phenomenon and a cute little picture just isn't capable of conveying very much information. A picture with some snow flakes on it doesn't really tell me if it's going to flurry, or if I'll need to get up early to go plow, or if the highway will be shut down by the time I get out of work. Same with a picture of a few raindrops. Can I still take the bike to work, or do I need to set up the sump pump in the basement?

This goes way past smart phones as well. Our local NPR station gives us the current weather, along with the rest of todays forecast. Sometimes (about half the time) they include tomorrows forecast. Well, I know today's weather. I'm living it. Tomorrow's weather is nice, but what about this weekend? Can I put off mowing the lawn until saturday?
Now I occasionally can get VT Public Radio. They have a great forecast- they tell you what the current weather patterns are doing, how they will develop, and how that will affect us over the next few days. Useful, and interesting. Granted, I'm sure they have a lot more information available to them than just a few pictures, but that's kind of my point.

So. What's with weather widgets?

People without windows?

Double checking reality?

A portal to alternate dimensions that I've been missing out on?

Just curious.

Well, in that case....

Why use a planner app when you can get a calendar or a nice looking planner at Franklin?

Why use a sim game when we live life?

Heck, why live life when we all know how it ends?

We do these things because we can and, sometimes, it can be fun=P

What makes you think everyone listens to the radio for their weather? I can pull my phone out and the weather is right there. I don't listen to AM radio or FM for that matter. I don't watch the local news either.

So for me having a weather widget is very handy.

It has the high, the low, the wind, an the humidity... so no, a weather widget isn't just a picture with snow flakes.

Sometimes just by looking out the window, I cannot tell what the temperature is.

Like this morning; it was -2 degrees outside. If I just looked out the window, it could have been 20,30, 40 for all I know.

It's not a necessity, just nice to know sometimes.

Its hard to see 100 miles away to see what weather is coming I know I just tried to make sure...... ;) and fwiw there are nice weather widgets that dont cost $ j/s

I ride a motorcycle, if I know ahead of time that there is a high chance of thunderstorms or after I've been inside a hospital working most of the day want to glance at my phone and see what the temps are outside, well, Weatherbug allows me to do just that. ;)

I think my weather app is tormenting me... when I have location enabled it says I'm in Alta Vega and it's always warm and sunny. So I grab my clubs and step outside... I'm in Chicago and it's cold and snowing... damn you weather widget... DAMN YOU

Same here. I just like a little more info as to what weather to expect.
I have two bookmarks, one for the National Weather Service 7 day forecast, one for the NWS radar. Quick, way more info.

And btw, my post was in jest. The questions are rhetorical. If I've offended any weather widget afficianados, I apologize. A little.

See, I think there's more to them than just the cute pictures.

Yours is mean.

How would you offend anyone? It's just a weather widget. But then again you are the Village Idiot!

I like weather widgets. I've got weather bug, it puts the current temp in the notification bar. So, while I'm at work, and want to go have a smoke, I take a glimps at my phone to see if I need to take a jacket outside with me... I work on the 5th floor in a large building with no windows.

If I'm planning something with my buds on the weekend, I can grab my phone and see if the weather is going to be a factor.

Another thing, last week we had a major storm roll though my area at 4am. 70mph winds and a couple of tornadoes. My wife woke me up scared cause it the weather woke her up and it looked like the apocalypse outside. Then the power went out. I grabbed my phone and opened weather bug. Saw the radar, wind speed and even weather alerts! Oh crap, tornado spotted a few miles NW of my area, moving towards us! Lets go hang out in the bathroom for a bit.

With no power, TVs and Computers weren't working. Even when the power came back, it was 4 in the morning and no news casts or radio reports where saying what was going on.

So, yeah, there are benefits to weather widgets and apps.

I use WeatherEye. It provides instant access to hourly, short term and long term forecasts. The widget also notifies me of severe weather warnings. It's also small, take the same space as two shortcuts.

The hourly forecasts are very useful. I park my car a few blocks away from my work. Looking at the weather widget will quickly let me know if I need an umbrella for the walk back to my car after work. I could listen to the radio, but the weather is only updated every 10 minutes.

One of the best things about a smart phone is the ability to acquire apps and widgets that address needs. My wife and I have jobs that are weather impacted, so, instead of having to stare at a television, or listen for radio broadcasts, we have info one click away on our devices.

Very cool. Very much worth the price of the gadget. ;)
