Web-based Gmail App?

imb

Lurker
Currently it seems that the default Gmail app stores and syncs messages in your phone memory. I think this is a resource hog.

I'm currently using http://m.gmail.com/ but would prefer an app version that doesn't store and sync messages locally. Does anyone know if there's a "web-based" Gmail app? Thanks.

Looking at my stock gmail app in the system app manager I see the app itself is 4.34mb with 204kb of data.

I use the gmail app pretty heavily and I've only accumulated 204kb of data. I wouldn't classify that as a resource hog.

You could always clear the data and turn off sync.

Out of curiosity how much data has yours accumulated?

Actually I haven't fully used it. When I saw that it's syncing, I've an impression it will actually sync with my gmail account which has almost 2GB of data, so I stopped using it. It's also quite laggy.

So does syncing actually downloads all your email? If yes then that's absolutely gonna be a resource hog. If it won't download all then up to how much data will it sync?

Yes it downloads your email otherwise you wouldn't have any access to your email offline. It doesn't download every single email you've ever received though. It's just like any other mobile email app in that regard. Where are you seeing that it's a resource hog?

Thanks for the reply.

I mean resource hog for the reason it downloads the email so if you have a lots of email (even if it accumulates just a few per day), it'll eventually eat out your storage space. I also find it laggy VS the mobile gmail website, which suggests that it's using some CPU power or lots of data transfer. The fact that it's syncing every now and then suggests it's a battery hog.

Anyway, the same is probably true to all email apps, except those that doesn't store messages locally (if such an app ever exists).

I get anywhere from 20-25 emails a day at my gmail account. I show my gmail app is using about 5.5 mb total. Any app that syncs is a potential battery hog. Just turn syncing off if that's a concern for you.
