WeChat restore connection error

Hi,
I recently got a new Note 10+ and am trying to transfer my WeChat history from my old device to the new one. I also have WeChat PC running on my Surface Pro and have managed to back up the chats from the old device to the PC. However, I am unable to restore it to my new phone. Whenever I select restore to phone it just displays the message on the phone "Connection error, Try again on computer".

They are both connected to the same network and obviously recognize each other because I have to confirm the login on the phone in order to open the PC version.

Any ideas?

Update: Problem solved. I have a VPN running on the PC and the phone. I had disconnected it on the PC but forgot to do it on the phone. Once I disconnected both, I was able to complete the transfer.

No VPN, but the same problem. Why does it say I am not on the same network?

Are both devices connected to the same WiFi router? Because they have to be on the same network, and must be able to communicate with each other. Some WiFi networks, like public, may block device to device connections, which would prevent Wechat restore and transfer from working.

I had the same problem on my Note 10+. Both devices were connected to the network. I have no VPN services running on the phone or laptop.

After digging into the settings of WeChat, I was able to backup WeChat successfully:

There are two settings in Wechat that controls how/when Wechat uses mobile data. Ensure that both are turned off.

  1. Go to Settings/App
  2. Select Wechat
  3. Select Mobile Data
  4. Ensure Allow background data usage is off
  5. Ensure Allow App while Data Saver on is off
  6. Force Stop Wechat
  7. Clear Cache
  8. Open WeChat
At this point, for the first time, I was able to backup Wechat to my laptop.
