Were widgets made to NOT be updated automatically with Android?

I have two widgets that don't update automatically, CalWidget and AudioManager. Calwidget will update but not instantaneously, usually a few minutes? AudioManager gives me an option to set the update interval. I just thought these things should update automatically...

Thats's exactly what the update intervals are supposed to do. Do you want widgets to update every second to see if there are changes? That would kill your battery.

yeah, i just thought the widgets would sync with the settings chosen/updates as they're changed.
