What Apps Should Every Android Have?

Zarafia

Newbie
I know that opinions on this are going to vary greatly, and that no two people have exactly the same needs. But I am very new to smartphones in general and Andriods in particular. I am wondering what you more experienced guys would think that every phone ought to have. Like apps that protect your phone, apps that just get used a lot in everyday life. I'm certainly not going to assume that Verizon gave me what I need already. (In fact, I wish there was a way to get rid of the "Play Golf" game app that they decided I needed to have LOL).
I was very surprised at all the apps that are available for free, and the low prices on the paid ones. But so far I've only downloaded free apps, and they have been, for the most part, impulsive "buys".
Thanks in advance!

Kindle, Out of Milk (a shopping list app), swiping sms, weatherbug, juice defender (i know people disagree with me, but I find it helps), chrome (if you are a dedicated google user), kids place (if you have kids), dropbox if you want to share files across devices, youversion bible, pocket for saving webpages to read offline, and phandroid :)

Evernote
Dropbox
LookOut, for the lost/stolen device feature more than antivirus.
Assistant
Shoot, app to take videos using an icon.
Google Drive
Flashlight

Flip board
ZEdge (for all your free ringtone needs :-)
Facebook
Words with friends
Mighty text ( let's you read your texts from any PC or tablet)
Wheres my droid - in case it gets lost/stolen

I have about a hundred apps and use these the most, by far:

Groupy No Ads to keep droid contacts organized like the PC does,
Connection Manager to have a simple button to turn data off,
Dropbox to share anything and everything with my PC,
GoTasks to sync and replicate the Tasks window on Google Calendar
DIGI Clock Widget for a big honkin’ time showing on my main screen,
Pocket to securely store sensitive data and sync to its PC program,
and a custom launcher. I use LauncherPro... outdated now but still indispensable

Some I've found useful that may not already have been listed:

Gas Buddy

Beat the Traffic

Accurate Compass

Slacker Radio

Flashlight

Missed Call

Thanks for all the replies guys!
This is exactly what I was looking for :).
Most of these apps are completely new to me. I've just downloaded Out of Milk (free version) and Dropbox.
On the description of Dropbox on Google Play Store, they say that "after you install Dropbox on your computer..." So I went to the Google Play Store on my laptop and only found the android app Dropbox. So I tried to install that on my computer, and I don't think it worked. Did I do something wrong? What am I supposed to do? I'd like to be able to share things from my phone with my laptop and my desktop.
Thanks again!

BTW, the flashlight app was the very first app I ever installed :). I saw my brother use it on his iphone and I thought it was just the coolest thing since sliced bread LOL. Then, about a week after I got my phone, it totally saved me! The power went out in my house at about 10pm and I was working in a spare bedroom. Suddenly it was pitch black, the room was in total dissaray and there was crap all over the floor. My regular flashlight was somewhere near my front door and I had no idea how to get to it. But I had my phone with me! Yay! (Stupid story, I know, but it's just an example of why I don't think I could live without my andriod :) )

Hi Zarafia,

In order to keep an eye on your battery, both Battery Monitor Widget and GSam Battery Monitor are very useful.

Similarly, if you want to keep an eye on your mobile data usage, there are many options but I like 3G Watchdog and My Data Manager.

For malware, both Dr Web Light and Zoner are pretty good.

In the case of loss of an Android device, take a look at Prey or Cerberus. To prevent loss of your Android, check out GotYa!

To prevent your Android cache memory from filling up, try 1Tap Cleaner.

If you want to keep your passwords safe, have a look at Keeper.

For backing up data, head over to MyBackup.

I use What's App for instant SMS messaging. It is really good.

That's enough to get you going.

I'm afraid I don't trust myself enough yet to feel confident enough to root my phone. Someday though...
So feel free to post root-only apps too :), just note that they require a rooted phone, if you don't mind.
