Help What are the checkboxes next to each app in app settings for?

And why can't I uncheck or check them?

The ones that are checked all seem to disappear from my homescreen between reboots, and I suspect it's somehow related to whatever that check means.

I don't have this in my phone, but if you select the app is there anything different about the information it gives? In particular, is there a "move to phone" or "move to sd" button? I suspect these apps may have been moved to sd.
