I've seen several posts by people mentioning that they rooted their phone. What exactly does that mean? Does it make the phone perform better? Also, is there a guide for dummies like me who have never done it before?

I've seen several posts by people mentioning that they rooted their phone. What exactly does that mean? Does it make the phone perform better? Also, is there a guide for dummies like me who have never done it before?

Rooting is the term used to describe getting full access to your phones software. It allows for you to switch to different roms and also to install some apps that otherwise would not work such as overclocking apps and wireless tether apps. This is just a brief summary. One other thing is that rooting you phone is a violation of your warranty and if your carrier found out it invalidates said warranty.
