What does Wi-Fi actually do?

I just got my HTC Incredible. I love the phone. But i'm just curious. What does turning Wi-Fi on and off actually do.....as in what does having Wi-Fi on provide?

I'm sure you can see that i'm not very savy regarding this stuff.

Thanks very much

You can connect to your home broadband router or a wi-fi hot-spot and get a quicker connection :)

Pretty much this.

You are able to connect to any wireless network, public or private (granted you need to have the security key).

The advantages are that it is usually faster than 3G and you are able to get good signal in places that 3G might not be very strong in (for example, in a basement or in an apt building).

Just make sure to keep it off if you're not using Wifi as keeping it on and not using it is just going to be draining your battery more.

Not only that, but it's important to note that using Wifi is free, meaning that you don't have to use your data plan.

I, for example, don't even have a data plan, seeing that I'm always at home or at school where there is a free Wifi network.
