What happens if I brick my phone trying to root?

It seems like tons of people actively use this forum to assist them in rooting their phones, and then post up about "bricking" their device and how they usually get it replaced under their mobile carrier's warranty.

So, does anyone with a TMo phone have such an experience that they'd like to share?
