What happens to new number if I transfer my old number to new phone?

I've had my new phone for only 1 month, but still have my old Nokia that has 50 minutes left on it and want to use it up before I transfer that number to this new phone. (both with Tmobile)

Just wondering if when I transfer my old number to the newer phone, can I keep the new phone #? I've given the new number to a couple of people, but I'm wondering if when my old number transfers, will this new number still work to reach me?

If not, what can I do to keep it?

Once you give up the phone the number goes back to the provider and eventually end up with someone else. You would have to pay for it to keep it.

This situation is a perfect opportunity to port your old number to Google voice, then have that send the call to your new phone. That way both the new and old numbers ring on the new phone. I think Google charges a nominal fee to port the number.
