What happens to old iphone if I change to Galaxy 3?

New member and sorry about posting what is likely a bonehead question as first outing. Also impossible to properly summarize in the subject line. My cellular contract is nearly up for my current iPhone 3GS. I've been googling reviews on Galaxy S3 and strongly leaning toward getting one in a couple of months. However, I use Apple devices with my TV (airport extreme and appleTV.) Not knowing exactly how things electronic work. I'm wondering, when I get the new Galaxy S3 with a different network (Koodo which is a branch of Telus which I'm currently on) and end my contract with Telus, does my iPhone 3GS become a paper weight? It's still a computer apart from its phone function and has apps I can use with AppleTV. As a computer, would it still function through wireless? i.e. the browser, remote app? Or does all of it just go dead, dead, dead. Sorry again to ask a question that's likely causing eye rolls among the more tech inclined. I did google with no luck. It's difficult to ask the right question what you don't know enough to use effective keywords.

I'll answer what I think you're asking about:

Yes, you can use your current iPhone (That won't have any service) for internet and that sort of thing as long as you have it connected to WIFI. Unless, I'm mistaken.

Set it up with Google Voice and you can use it as a home phone over wifi with its own phone number. You can do anything with it as you did when it was with a carrier, just a bit more restricted.

Thanks for your answers to a question I was almost too embarrassed to ask. Since Apple integrates its devices nicely, I was wondering if I might be losing anything in relation to my cluster of Apple devices if I get a Galaxy SIII. So, as I understand it, once I'm no longer with a cellular provider, the iphone will still be able to all its usual things (apart from phone) like browser, apps etc. And that's a very interesting bit of info that it can work with Google voice which I'll have to investigate. I do have Skype on my iphone which is okay for calling out, but doesn't allow calling in except for people on my contact list.

ETA: I'll come back and let you know how it works out. Couple of months until my contract is up, but by that time Koodo is supposed to have the Galaxy SIII.

Yes, it will work. Without a SIM card it'll become the equivalent of an iPod Touch - or as you described your home setup, an Apple remote.

My old phone is a Droid X, not an iPhone, but it works just great using WiFi only. I have it in a dock on my desk and use it as for the weather and clock apps. Sometimes I'll undock it and my BF and I will play Words with Friends (he doesn't have - or want - a smartphone). As someone said, your device will be like an iPod Touch.

I would love to try for myself, though.

Anyone willing to send me their iPhone? ;)

Sure if you send me $400 - LOL

My 7yr old daughter uses my old Iphone as an Itouch. Much easier than having to buy one. Plus she now has no interest in my new phone.

Text Plus from the app store to get wifi texting and calling. You can text anyone and they can text you back once they have your number. Same with calling except you have to buy the minutes, which are pretty cheap honestly, or earn them by doing offers such as watching a vid or downloading an app to run it. an alternative to google voice :D Google Voice and Text Plus are the two best wifi calling and texting apps. Allows that phone feel unlike other apps that require people to know your username to text/call you. Im a text plus user :D

Wow, glad I asked. I was going to give the old iPhone away, but I see with those apps it will remain a very useful object. Thanks for the heads up on other ways to get phone function and texting.

Yup... my 3G is now a very old and expensive iPud...

Sits in the bathroom with the expensive Logitech speakers / dock as my musical entertainment when I do my biz... :)
