What is Facebook "Data"?

I'm continually fighting the "Low on Space" battle and while clearing various caches I have the following question. I'm using the official Facebook app and it's taking up 8 MB of space - 4.35MB for the application and 3.7MB of "Data".

What is this "Data" that's taking up all of this space? If it doesn't hurt me, how do I clear it periodically?

The data for that is just a list of all your friends, probably includes their profile pictures as well.

So, I guess clearing the data wouldn't do any good since it would just repopulate itself, eh? Harrumph!
