What is Kies?

If you want to receive official updates, sync files, makes backups of your contacts, etc. you will need Kies, yes.

Dear All,
I'm making a general comment on not just kies, but makers suites to connect your mobile ... be it , samsung, Nokia, LG or whatever to your PC.

The only one that really worked was the Nokia PC suite.

The LG was the next one I tried. Reading through the forums, getting new drivers from Malasia and in the end giving up using the suite and using direct data connection

The samsung galaxy s plus, my present mobile, has a PC suite called KIES, which has exactly the same problems as the LG version. Impossible to connect to the PC.

Having said that , fortunately the Galaxy does have an SD card and you can insert this directly ( with adaptor) into the PC as another drive.

In my case I only need to back, music, video amd contacts which are easily read on the PC from the microSD card.

Conclusion
----------

There is a plethora of "tricks" to connect mobile to PC. Some people say, this is the way to go. Others say, ... doesn't work for me. etc etc

Deduce....:eek:Not worth the effort trying to make KIES work. Work meaning, bidirectional data flow of your mobile data for storage on the PC or for updating the mobile. :)

Bye Fred

I suppose you are referring to when you start the s/w & the phone is not connected. It will do so as the option for checking for updates is selected. Update the s/w on your computer (do not connect the phone) & it wont show up till the next update comes along. :)

Here you will find all info you need. Samsung Apps

No, you won't!. It's a guide to installing Kies, and I can see you need your credit card - but does not say what Kies is, why you would want it (or not)

Please in straightforward terms - what is kies for? why would I choose to install it? what are the alternatives?

@pissed off: KIES is the Samsung equivalent s/w like PC Suite/Nokia Suite is for Nokia phones. It does the same functions for Samsung phone. You can use it for taking backups/sync your contacts, sms, photos, data on your memory card etc. the credit card info you are referring to is for purchasing Apps form Samsung Apps but that is not compulsory. I have this s/w & I have not given any cc details. This s/w also installs drivers for Samsung phones. It can be used to update the firmware of your phone as & when Samsung makes it available. An alternative s/w is mentioned by me in a post above.

which of the two would you recommend to synch outlook contacts and diary? I don't want to go through google calendar unless I have to. I sue outlook on Pc and netbook, and my wifes uses it too and we send.ics files to put stuff in each other's diaries. Idealy I'd like to see the calendar with all teh colour coding I use in outlook (used to do this on my palm TX).

also do I need the drivers to explore the phone? (I sued to be able to wander around inside my nokia with nokia suite 7 copy files around etc.

I use MyPhoneExplorer for syncing with Outlook. When you say dairy I suppose you mean calendar in Outlook. If yes then the answer is yes. I don’t know about the colour coding as I use Outlook only as a fall back in case of the worst case scenario. Even when you installed Nokia PC suite it installed the drivers only the user was not aware of it. This is the case with all applications which act as an interface with another device. The drivers are needed & come with the package. If you use MyPhoneExplorer then it does all what KIES does except connecting to Samsung Apps & updating the firmware of the phone. :) Check out http://socrates0.blogspot.in/ it has a post on this s/w plus something on Ace.
