Android is the open source mobile operating system developed by Google. In addition to that there are modifications that manufacturers add, such as their own user interfaces (Samsung's Touchwiz, HTC's Sense, etc). Then there are the apps which provide the functions which people often think of as part of android (phone, calendar, application store).
