What is permalink?

I see at the top right hand corner of every posting something called "permalink" - I click on it but nothing happens. What does this do?

It gives you the url to a specific post within a thread (in your address bar). It's handy if you want to link to a post with some good info, but don't want to have others trawl through the entire thread to find it.

To take a random thread for example. This link will give you the first post in the sticky we have in the Android Lounge. This will take you too the same thread, but the 16th reply.

Make sense?

It does for sure but can U break it down for me how to put it in a posting? For example, how did you do it in the above posting?

If you want to link a specific post in another, find that post and hit the permalink in the top right corner. Highlight the contents of your address bar and right click, copy or Ctrl+C, whichever you're most comfortable with. Once done, open up your new post/reply, say what you want to say and if you want to link to another post, just paste what you've copied in to it.

If you want to make a specific word a hyperlink (as I'd done in my previous post to this one), one of the buttons at the top of the box is a picture of the globe, with a link on it:

Hyperlink.png

Start typing out whatever it is you want to say and highlight the word you want to link to, hit the globe button, then paste the url into the box that appears and click ok.

You'll get some bbcode (like below), but when you hit post/reply it will look normal.

Quick trick - when you're first writing a post, you can easily just click the permalink button and it will copy it to your computer's clipboard, and you can paste i in your post (even in a quick reply) and it will automatically grab the page title and format the link for you. This will work with all AndroidForum and Phandroid links, but also with just about any link you put in your post.

The only time this will not work is if the page itself does not have a real title.

So, in making this quick reply, I've added a few links I have open and you can see how it works - all I did was paste the actual URLs from the broswer:

  1. StartSSL? Certificates & Public Key Infrastructure
  2. https://market.android.com/details?...9uYS50dHMudm9pY2ViZXRhLmVuZy51c2Eua2VuZHJhIl0
  3. [ROM] [Alpha6] Ics4Bionic Preview 12-06-2011
  4. http://www.bcheck.net/apps/hoekey-faqs.htm
  5. Hash of Codes: HOW-TO Safestrap

As you can see, the odd numbered links parsed the actual page title and put them there automatically, while the even numbered links did not b/c there is no page title associated with the link.
