What is the best security app?

My Droid isn't rooted. Do you know of any backup app that would work with that? Titanium appears to only work with root.

Root it using z4root. It is painless and you can use TB. Super user would tell you when the malware apps requested root access when the security apps would have missed it.

I have a D2 (not Global). Rooting is attractive to me, but I don't think I am smart enough to fix the phone if something goes wrong.

I just noticed it was a D2 in the OP. z4root is very easy, and I don't think it can be messed up. If you are not going to go and try romming then you wont mess anything up. You can also use TB to freeze system apps to prevent them from opening in the background even if you never use them...cou-google maps-gh...I wouldn't reccomend removing system apps as from what I have read it looks like if you remove them and VZW/moto pushes an update you will not be able to use the update unless you have all system apps installed.

i use LookOut. It has an extra feature where you can login online and find your phone. It scans all downloads too to make sure its clean.

So if (when) Verizon finally updates the OS... will I have to "un-root" to do the update?

If it is anything like the D1 the update will unroot you. There may be a way to update manually without losing root but I am not sure with the locked bootloader. I think moto has confirmed the D2 will be getting an update to GB.

Did it pick up the 54 app's from Google Market?

I think most anti virus apps for android look for apps that do things they do not list in the app's permissions. The problem with those apps is they stated the permissions but people didn't care.

It is a no brainer that a wallpaper app needs access to toggle bluetooth, read my contacts, send texts, make phone calls, (/Sarcasm) along with full internet access.

While the end user should have caught it when they chose to accept permissions lookout saw it as doing what it has been allowed to do.
