What is the "Data Roaming" setting?

I have the option of "Data roaming: connect to data services when roaming" to be checked on my phone. Right now it is unchecked, but I can't remember if I unchecked it.

What does this do?

When you use towers other than Verizon. Since Verizon does not charge you extra (roaming charges), let your phone roam and collect data.

What if I'm not with Verizon? (In Canada)

You need to see if roaming charges apply to you and if you are likely to encounter roaming service. If no, do not worry about it. If yes and you do not want to pay those fees, turn off roaming. When you are then in roam no data will not be transfered.
