What is the deal with the headset plug?

I have to use my Huawei Ascend from Metropcs in a call center and found that the 2.5mm headsets that go to the phones would not work. Metropcs gave me a real cheap headset when I went to see about getting something that would work. I saw that the plug on the one that worked had three sections.

is that standard for wired cell phone plugs?

Yes, one section for left, one for right, and one for microphone

Actually that would be four.

Three would be: left, right and ground. Probably in the order of: tip, ring, sleeve.

To add a microphone there would need to be two 'rings' on the plug.

OR,

he said it was from a call centre, so it's likely that the headphones were mono (ie left and right receive the same signal. So I guess that could use a TRS plug but would lose the stereo field.
