Root What is the latest verison for G1?

I heard that TMOBILE still won't update their customer with G1 to the latest, so i'm thinking about rooting my phone and do a force update, unless someone care tell me why this isn't wise... So what is the most stable verison that I can upgrade to on my G1? I'm current running DMD64. Also I heard ther are diffrent type of the cupcake called MODs?

I think DMD64 is the las official, for newer you need root and custom ROM.
I'm running FGR83 (Android 2.2.1) CM6.1.0 from CyanogenMod | Android Community Rom based on FroYo., it's pretty stable, with swap on sdcard also usable, but not so fast like newer phones with Android 2.2. Everything is working well, but there are also many other ROMs.
Pros: bluetooth is working (not crippled like in 1.6), contacts sorting by last name, apps can be moved to sd (some apps and only some parts of the apps) and about 25000 other things
Cons: maybe lose of warranty (anyway, I've opened my phone first week to change the white keyboard to black:-), it needs about 2 hours to update the phone, but everything is well described in install manual on cyanogenmod forum

Yeah I took my phone into a company that does software upgrades and they used the Cyanogen 6.1.0 Froyo 2.2 mod. The only issue I had was the (very short) delays between apps, and home screen. Also wish that the mod wasn't loaded down with their customs apps, and media. I wish there was a strip down version of the 2.2 somewhere.

Go to 'CM Settings' and 'Lock home in memory'

3 options that I know about / have tried (no doubt there will be others)

a) Search 'Cyanogen barebones' and follow the wiki (time consuming and not always successful)

b) Pay a couple of dollars and download 'Root Explorer' (or similar) from the market. Use the info from the barebones wiki to know what .apks can safely be removed (easiest & fastest)

c) Flash 'Biffmods Leaving on a jet plain' ROM (my current ROM). It is a stripped down version of CM6 (easy but considering you got someone else to flash CM6, probably not your best option).

Remember to backup your current rom BEFORE attempting to do any of the above. :)
