What is this dot for?

it comes on usually when i watch whatsApp videos, but not always. it stays on for a few seconds, sometimes less than a second. it goes away if i take a screenshot, or turn wifi off, or exit whatsapp. i'm running os10 on my unrooted samsung galaxy s9 plus.

I am not so sure on what color of dot you have, maybe it is a green dot, that is for Camera and Micrphone, mine is green.

as u can see, it's greyish. i don't see it when i use my mic or camera.

Unless the S9 got an unofficial update to OneUI 3.x, I wouldn't know. One UI 3.x (Android 11) has a dot whenever something (app or service, or even malware) is using the camera or mic, and it's a privacy notification, similar to the same feature on iOS 15 on Apple devices.
