What is this top bar icon?

Can anyone tell me what this top bar icon is? Looks like the letter "N" with a sideways wifi indicator. It is almost always present, just unsure what it is actually indicating.

I don't understand the question. Near field communication only works to a maximum of 1-2 cm from the back of the device.
