What makes a good antenna?

I'm told that my connection issues with calls constantly breaking up is because my phone has an outdated antenna, and not because I use T-Mobile. I have an Xperia C5.
I'm wondering if anyone can give me a very simple explanation of the antenna and cell bands? Would a more recent phone like the xz1 help rectify this issue?
