what makes the google g1 different from other phones running android?

is there anything that makes it different? do all the phones running android do the same things?


obviously hardware will be different between the phones, but software wise is there any difference?

are all the android phones as easy to root as the g1? are all the roms compatible or do you have to get a phone specific rom?
 
Most ROMs are phone specific. I think that the HTC Dream and Magic 32B can interchange ROMS, but the 32A magic needs it's own.
