Hello, welcome to Android Forums!

I also have a cannon camera, and a Nexus 7 (2012). I usually bring photos from my camera to the Nexus by first putting them on my computer, then uploading them to my Dropbox account. From there, I can access them on my Nexus 7 and download them to the tablet if I choose (or I can just view them online). The Dropbox app is easy and convenient. Sign up for Dropbox here if you haven't yet.
Otherwise, you could use an SD card reader and a OTG cable to move them more directly by plugging the card right into the tablet.

Or the old-fashioned way. Put the pics on your computer, then plug your Nexus 7 into the computer and click and drag them over.

I don't believe you need to root to do any of this, though rooting is easy on this device.
