the iPhone is no-go for a variety of reasons. I want an Android, but I don't like any of the current form-factors and skins. Basically what I want is a Nexus-1 with retina display and Gingerbread. But no such device exists.

I guess people say they want gingerbread because the UI is the last big thing to take care of and gingerbread will supposedly address that.
Exactly. People are saying the Gingerbread UI is gonna be awesome.
People say a lot of things. The Beatles said they were bigger than Jesus. Hitler said... things I don't want to repeat. Kanye West said he'd quit rapping if 50 Cent outsold him. It's all just talk and speculation right now. If that's what you want, then you'll have to wait. If you don't want to wait, pick the best of what's out there right now. If you kept waiting for the next new thing to come out, you'd still be rocking a Motorola StarTAC.
I have to believe that something like a Nexus 2 is coming out next year. Why should I compromise on form factor and UI? I don't want HTC's skin over the vanilla base. Give me a choice!
