Root What type of root?

My friend says i should just back up to SD and then use z4root. According to mr pigfish i have gen 1 orange san francisco. I have no idea what z4root is, but he said its much easier than rooting on computer.

And he said that a stable version of caynogen 7, android 2.3 is out. He said to download rom manager or something, really confusing or something.

I dont know though, im very new to all this. He just said "do it do it do it" again and again... so yeah.

should i root via that way? Or is there a way to avoid getting bricked.

also can i root it but also make a back up of my original os, then restore whenever i want, but also restore back to root whenever i want?

Also can i restore warranty if i root, then restore back to original os?

If my phone breaks, is there any way i can restore so i can get warranty reapplied?

Can you link me to the best possible and most efficient way without bricking or anything, and also reapplying warranty way of rooting?

Also is there 2.3 out for blade? If not when is it coming out? And when it does come out, do i have to delete and reinstall everything from scratch to go form 2.2 to 2.3

thanks.

Can't comment on the Cyanogen 2.3 , but everyone swears by the Swedish Spring Version 4. I'm using Japanese Jellyfish 9 and I've no problems with it at all.

A detailed guide and a load of questions you might have are found here. The guide mentioned there has a link to the stock orange ROM so if something goes wrong, you can flash back to that and your warranty would (hopefully) be intact.

I followed that guide to the letter and I had no issues at all, so I can confirm it works. If you want to go for the Swedish Spring, I'm not sure if you'd need an alternative version of Clockword Mod?

If your mate is so desperate and thinks it's so easy, get him to do it ;)

i read this other thread saying one click roots brick your phone. So im just gonna do it the hard and tediouse way.

What do you m ean "hopefully"....

Do you have a link to the other thread? I'd be interested to have a read. I can't confirm either way, but I can confirm 1 click root worked for me and I'm sure a few others too. It's your phone though so if you've any concerns, you're quite right in looking at alternative methods.

By hopefully all I mean is that it should technically work, but never having had to reflash myself, I can't confirm.

i will say this..... (most are aware of my intense hatred of one click phone only root apps) rooting is a serious but rewarding undertaking.

your warranty is voided by rooting the phone. some people when bricking their phones are successful in returning them, but i feel this is dishonest and contributes to device lockdown of android devices.

that being said, 99% of "bricked" phones are recoverable...(ok maybe not that high of a percentage but still)...most people just give up at the first sign of trouble.

the computer root for our phones isnt that hard. its actually useful as you it requires you to install the drivers for the phone, which is a neccessary step anyway, and takes maybe 10 minutes from start to finish.

odin is also something you should have installed on your computer if you plan to root...this will help you recover from virtually any "brick" that results from rooting. Odin Restore files to get you to stock - xda-developers

its good to have odin installed with all the files before even attempting to root.

now back to z4root. yes...it works. however i feel the danger in using an app like this is that it gives you access to system files and such through root that the average user shouldnt be touching without understanding what they are doing. you should always be well read and versed on any mod that you do to your phone and phone only root lets you skip so much of that, that it really does you a disservice.

some will disagree with me and say im being a jerk by advocating that this is a "wrong" way to root, but i think you will find yourself in a much better position by doing it the "right" way.

if/when you finally take the plunge to root, many of us here are happy to help with any questions related to root apps or getting back to stock...and then down the line custom recovery, kernels, and roms.

again..if you are going to undertake something so serious...do it right the first time. :) __________________

is Swedish Spring Version 4 a one click?

i dont know what you mean but i only have one phone. and thats the orange san fran.

What I meant was, that the link you posted was taken from a subforum for a specific device. I was asking if one click root was a concern on that specific device (Samsung Fascinate), not all android phones. Wasn't directed at you specifically, anyone that reads this.

and is swedish spring 4 a one click?

How To Install Android 2.2 FroYo On The Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade From Scratch

is this the swedish spring 4

will this guide be good, will this let me do it without being bricked?

That's the guide I used and I was fine. It uses Japanese Jellyfish, but it has links for other ROMS that can be used too.

Nah, it was ported from a Swedish ROM originally, but you could set it to Swedish if that tickles your fancy.

If you've clockwork on, I think it's pretty hard to brick your phone cos it's a mini OS that's loaded before the main ROM kicks in.

So if i have clockwork on i can unbrick. Or someone on this forum or modaco forums can help me unbrick?

Oh so bricking is when a mini os is started before the actual os... hmm...

oh... well hopefully mine doesnt brick as im planning on rooting today. Rather worried. If it bricks... im dead lol. But i really want more apps. Not too interested in set cpu tbh, just want more apps so i can save to SD :D Oh and a faster phone too. I suppose that comes under set cpu though doesnt it...

If you get one of the alternative ROMs on, you won't need Set CPU, the difference in speed between stock and 2.2 is incredible!

You should be fine, I was mega paranoid as it wasn't my handset, but it is very easy!

I know i have asked this maybe a few times. But this is the most important thing.

1) Where can i find original stock os so i can reapply warranty
2) Can i back my os that i have right now without rooting or anything? If so how do i do this.

basically i want to keep a spare backup of what i have at the moment on my phone. but i have NO IDEA how to do this.

I also dont know how to get into recovery mode.

Its just so that if ever my phone does mess up i can go into recovery mode, press restore, and then choose a back up i have made, and then restore. right?

thanks. After this question is answered. And i have no more to ask. I will root :)

Right at the bottom of this page, you'll get the list of stock ROMs available.

No, you need to root to back up what you have right now.

Once Clockwork is installed, you can backup via that, or outside of clockwork, there's an app called Titanium Backup. Via clockwork, it's just by the "Backup & Restore" menu.

You need to install a recovery manager to get into recovery mode.

Which guide are you using?

Stock, Debranded & Custom ROMs For Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade

that guide. 1)Do you reccomend that one, or is there a better one arround.

2)Wait so if i root, then i back up, then i restore, my root is gone right? Because rooting voids warranty, and if i back up, 3)do i back up the root aswell? Just wondering. 4)Or do i have to install the stock rom?

so i download the stock rom. 5)Do i download it to the phone? 6)Or do i drag it to the phone memory via pc. 7)And where in the phone do i drop it?

8)is this the one for my phone? Orange San Francisco Stock OUK_P729BV1.0.0B08
i bought it in the uk, about a few days ago, its a tft, gen 1, white, from prepaymania.

9)Also, i know this is very dumb, but does rooting affect my tarrif number, my network or anything. 10)Also does it delete any of my text messages and contacts? 11)If it does, 12)how do i save them?

thanks. I know this is long winded, but please help me out :)

I know im being greedy or stupid, but is it ok if you answer all 12 questions? I would really appreciate it :)

Jeez......

:p

1. That's the guide I used, worked a charm. I found it the best as it listed potential error messages I could get during install. Incidentally, none of the errors it mentioned could happen, happened. It was a flawless install.

2, 3 & 4. When you back up, it backs your phone up to exactly the state it was at the point of back up so root etc will be on the backup. If you want to take it back for whatever reason, you're best to just install one of the Stock ROMS that are kicking about.

5. Best to download it on your PC. I've a folder full of ROMS.

6 & 7. Yes, you can drag it onto the root of the SD Card via the PC. That's the way it tells you to do it in the guide. However, to save confusion, don't do that unless something goes wrong and you actually need to use it. With Clockwork on there, you can still mount the phone as an external drive to the PC to copy stuff if you need to.

8. Yes, although check the build number of your handset just to be sure. Settings -> About Phone -> Software information.

9. Nope, but what's a tarrif number? Which network are you btw? My Mrs is O2 and rather than O2, her network is now displayed as Telefonica O2 UK Ltd and I think 3 are displayed as Hutchison. I confirmed that the O2 thing is ok with a friend of ours who works for O2. She says it's just the full, company name of O2, as 3's is Hutchison.

10, 11 & 12. Your texts will be gone, but your contacts can/should be backed up to the gmail account associated with the handset.

To check, go into your gmail account, click contacts. Do you see a list of all the numbers on your phone? If no, go into the phones contacts, hit Menu -> Export to SD Card. This will back up your phone contacts to a .csv or .vcf file (can't remember which) on the SD Card. You can import this via your gmail account. Mount the phone as a disk drive to your PC, then search for the file you just created. Once found, copy to your desktop, open your gmail account, hit contacts again, then More Actions, then Import. Then select the file you just dropped onto your desktop. You may not need to do that though, they could already be there. I know my Gf's were, but when I to factory reset my DHD, I had to back my contacts up that way.

You can back up & restore SMS's too, using this, but I've never used that so I can't confirm how good it is. It's apparently one of the better ones.

It's totally cool, I was paranoid when I did it for the first time, so asking loads of questions is not a problem at all, better to be safe than sorry. It really is a doddle though. :)

I can either give you my paypal details, or you can hit the "Thanks" button below this post. :p

Thanks loads man.

Yeah tarrif number means phone number. No idea why i even said that. Ignore that.

My gmail is synced, so i THINK its on mya ccount, however just incase it wasnt, i backed up to SD :)

yes ok, im still really worried... Lol... i dont even know why.
