What will happen if I turned off sync?

I know that may be the reason of my fast battery drainage.

Exactly what turning sync off will do, not sync anything. You will have to refresh Gmail, FB and all other accounts manually, instead of the phone automatically checking for you. The battery saved by disabling sync isn't worth the irritation. I personally like to see notifications and emails soon after they're sent to me ;)

When you mean notifications do you mean like text messages or what about kik messages?

SMS/MMS will work as usual, app based notifications, like KIK, Facebook, G+ etc. will have to be manually checked, by you when you open the app. Open your sync menu, you should be able to see every app that uses sync, as well as pick which apps you want to sync, in case you don't want to miss kik messages.... :D

I've never had sync turned on - not quite sure what it does - and I can confirm that I still get e-mail and SMS notifications. Google Now also works and puts things in the notification drop down, though it doesn't make a noise when it does it.

I don't actually bother with FB or Twitter.

I don't get news notifications - the app refreshes when I open it.

Leaving sync on is definitely a battery hog, download Periodic Auto Sync from the playstore, you can choose to set it anyway you want. I usually have it turn on every 4hours for 1 minute, but you can set it as you choose. Huge battery saver!;)
