All for GMO labeling here. Likely won't stop me from purchasing something, but at least I know what's in it. Just another issue the American people want by a huge margin, but our elected officials don't want to give us.

I hate how Monsanto are single handedly destroying GM in the public mind. We will need more of it what with climate change and such but this crowd simply have no scruples.

I will not agree about how much people do or do not know on this forum, (to avoid warnings, you know?) but generally speaking, many people on either side actually do not know if Monsanto is good or evil; they know little to nothing about how safe or unsafe the food supply is.
They react to stories written by people that also do not know either way.

I certainly have, agriculture is rather big here.
Everything can be claimed to be BS science.
GMO is just more advanced breeding.
Eh, well I doubt that's the case, or vice versa.
It certainly has been in the past for many countries. Indeed much of the world still can't feed itself, eg, Egypt.
I'd like to think GM crops might be able to reduce the use of pesticides and such (The idea of pesticide resistance stuff is awful in my mind though).
It's not all black and white.

People should know as much as possible about your food. It's done here although with the horsemeat scandal it's evidently flouted.
I agree with that within reason of course! Please read my posts.
I am saying that people should be considerate rather than resorting to knee-jerk reactions. Knee-jerk reactions lead to the banning of communist parties and the burning of mosques.
Anyway, I'd say a lot of the chemicals even in some of the cereals out there pose an exponentially greater threat to your children's kids than genetically modified food. Lest we not forget that we have been genetically modifying food for hundreds of years by breeding.

A Monsanto official told the New York Times that the corporation should not have to take responsibility for the safety of its food products. "Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food," said Phil Angell, Monsanto's director of corporate communications. "Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job."
It would be nice to think the FDA can be trusted with these matters, but think again. Monsanto has succeeded in insuring that government regulatory agencies let Monsanto do as it wishes. Take a look:
Prior to being the Supreme Court Judge who put GW Bush in office,Clarence Thomas was Monsanto's lawyer.
The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture (Anne Veneman) was on the Board of Directors of Monsanto's Calgene Corporation.
The Secretary of Defense (Donald Rumsfeld) was on the Board of Directors of Monsanto's Searle pharmaceuticals.
The U.S. Secretary of Health, Tommy Thompson, received $50,000 in donations from Monsanto during his winning campaign for Wisconsin's governor.
The two congressmen receiving the most donations from Monsanto during the last election were Larry Combest (Chairman of the House Agricultural Committee) and Attorney General John Ashcroft. (Source: Dairy Education Board)
In order for the FDA to determine if Monsanto's growth hormones were safe or not, Monsanto was required to submit a scientific report on that topic. Margaret Miller, one of Monsanto's researchers put the report together. Shortly before the report submission, Miller left Monsanto and was hired by the FDA. Her first job for the FDA was to determine whether or not to approve the report she wrote for Monsanto. In short, Monsanto approved its own report. Assisting Miller was another former Monsanto researcher, Susan Sechen. Deciding whether or not rBGH-derived milk should be labeled fell under the jurisdiction of another FDA official, Michael Taylor, who previously worked as a lawyer for Monsanto.

I believe the movie is rather biased. Or not. Or half and half. Do not know, but it has to be one of the three.
Reviews would likely tell me we are screwed and here is what the big, bad farmers are doing. Then I look for an alternative view and it points out the lies and reasons why the documentary is bad.
I do not want to spend my time chasing facts around the net, so I'll just get me a big, old bag of Crown Burger fries, a genetically modified shake and perhaps a large burrito and die fat and happy.
Some big producers were invited to be interviewed and they all said no. Either they have something to hide or, as I suspect, they did not want their words twisted by a possible agenda.
People that review the masterpiece likely do not know anything about farmers, food, science; the film just (likely) seems logical so they give it three thumbs up.

But, do you know enough to tell if something is actually good or bad? There is anti-freeze in all chocolate, does that bother you? We do not KNOW ANYTHING, really, about what some are so up in arms about. They do not know if the products Monsanto sells are good or bad. Many are likely reacting to some web site or a silly documentary film.
I do not know if Monsanto's products are good or bad. Not really, and you probably do not know either.
Look at the list of dangerous chemicals in fruits and vegetables and chocolate. Very bad things put there by nature.
Sure, we should know what is in our food, but until we know exactly what the ingredients do or mean, we cannot judge the product. Hells Bells, we have people scared silly over Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, and Hydric acid in our foods.
Problem is, the protestors do not know these are different names for water. Yet they want to raise hell and ban the stuff. These are the same people tghat pass petetions, run web sites and write stupid books.
Consider tomatoes. Farmers are legally allowed to call their friuts "vine ripened" if even the slightest trace or red or pink is showing. The fruits are then ripened in gas.
My guess is this happens with many organic farmers who lie about their wares to justify the high prices. They all ready hook people who do not know what Organic really means.
Monsanto's food products are 100% organic, so does that make you feel better?

Actually, these chemicals are put there by Mother Nature. Antifreeze in your food and cyanide in your chocolate.

IWas Refering to propylene glycol, the anti freeze product used particularly in American ice cream....if course there are other products with trace elements etc of harmful things, Christ we all gotta die after all ;-)

Well I'd imagine most thinks are fine in small quantities. The problem is chemicals that build up in the body (heavy metals are the most dangerous).
But yes I think to be honest people would be better off marching about chemicals rather than GM. It's a bit like the whole nuclear thing, people get scared by what they don't understand. Bhopal alone killed thousands and still kills today, for example. But anyway, it's all a bit irrelevant. I just don't like fearmongering.
