What's Music, What Isn't

My phone (probably everyone's) assumes any audio file is music, meaning that I will occasionally hear one of my voice notes or a ringtone when I am listening to music in shuffle mode.

Does anyone have a trick for flagging certain files to keep them out of the music player?

Perhaps a player that allows you to exclude files with certain characters in the name?

Some media players will only scan designated folders for music. If you designate the folders where you have music, and don't designate folders with ringtones, notification sounds, etc., then you can be sure that your media player will only play music.

Rocket Player has this functionality. I assume others may as well.

What music app are you using that it's picking up, what I can only assume, something like "Facebook Pop" as a music file?

I know I have used Spotify, Google Music, PowerAMP, and none of these have every added this to their library.

All "ringtones" should be within the following folders based on your need: Ringtones, Alarms, Notifications. This will cause the designed sound to show up in the picker for the above situations, and by default, Android's media scanner will ignore these folders when looking for photos, videos, and music for applications. It's also more elegant than throwing .nomedia files all over your internal storage.

As for audio notes, most applications will store them within their application directory and block them from showing up within the Android media scanner. If you're putting audio notes on the phone yourself, then you'll want to consolidate them within a folder and use a .nomedia file, as directed above.
